Abstract:

This study was designed to document the use of Kirkpatrick's four levels of evaluation. Kirkpatrick's four levels is a long standing training evaluation classification scheme for evaluating training that has been advocated for use in evaluating performance improvement initiatives. Although it was never designed for non-training performance improvement interventions and never intended to be considered a model for evaluation, Kirkpatrick's four levels have been cited as the dominant evaluation model in performance improvement.

This inquiry used content analysis to examine published case studies describing authentic organization performance improvement situations. The individual case analyses were followed by a cross-case aggregation designed to identify patterns of performance improvement practices by practitioners.
