The perception of health sciences faculty concerning the ability of students to develop communication skills in on-line courses

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of health science faculty concerning the ability of students to develop communication skills in on-line courses. Data were gathered to determine student development of communication skills and course design elements/strategies faculty utilize that facilitate purposeful engagement to develop interpersonal and therapeutic communication skills.

Both quantitative and qualitative results revealed faculty perceive students are developing appropriate levels of interpersonal and therapeutic communications skills if the course is designed to facilitate these skills. Faculty found it their responsibility to design coursework to facilitate this outcome. Faculty perceive students are developing communication skills in their on-line courses, but without some face-to-face interaction students may not sufficient levels interpersonal and therapeutic communications skills.
