Role of vocational counseling and education in work attitudes and job placement of recovering substance abusers

Abstract:

The Welfare to Work program has changed how vocational rehabilitation services are delivered across the U.S. (Lichter & Jayakody, 2002). This study utilized a quasi-experimental design and aimed to extend findings of previous studies, which indicated that vocational counseling plays a role in improving job placement outcomes amongst recovering substance abusers (Shepard & Reif, 2004). Recent findings also suggested that job placement is positively correlated with the level of education and work attitudes (Magura, Staines, Blankertz, & Madison, 2004). Therefore, this study examined the relationship between duration of counseling hours and level of education on ensuing work attitudes. Lastly, this study explored the relationship between work attitudes and job placement rates. Two forms of job-placement vocational counseling, baseline and brief, were presented for three months. While baseline counseling was comprised of 20 hours of counseling services in three months, brief counseling was comprised of 10 hours in three months. Participants were randomly assigned to participate in either the brief or baseline group and progress was measured via a pretest-posttest design that captured work attitudes via the Job Search Attitudes Inventory (JSAI). One month after the completion of counseling, participants were tracked for employment. Results revealed that work attitudes significantly improved as a function of higher education. Also, results demonstrated that baseline counseling was associated with significantly higher work attitude scores than brief counseling. The correlation between employment rates and work attitude scores was marginal and very weak. Implications of how findings will enhance the provision of job placement services offered to recovering drug abusers being treated by large public rehabilitation agencies will be discussed.
