An analysis of the key components of a formal mentoring program for international students at Robert Morris University

Abstract:

This research represents a detailed look at the academic and social barriers international students face at Robert Morris University (RMU). The three international sample populations in this study: students and faculty at RMU, and industry professionals at GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare identified the critical components that may decrease barriers and increase retention and successful completion of degrees of international students at RMU through a formal mentoring program. The findings of the study were conducted through interviews and focus groups and clearly suggest advantages to developing a formal mentoring program for international students at RMU. Based on the findings, a Transition Model with three phases; Orientation, Continuation, and Mentorship was formulated. Such a model may provide international students at RMU with the key elements needed to successfully transition from their first day on campus to the time they graduate.
