The relationships between Community Health Workers managers' leadership behavior and CHWs' perception of their manager's effectiveness, CHWs' effort, and satisfaction

Abstract:

This study examined the relationships between Community Health Workers (CHW) managers' full-range leadership behaviors as measured by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire and CHWs' perception of their manager's effectiveness, CHWs' satisfaction with their manager, and CHWs' extra effort. In addition, it investigated the relationship between the full-range leadership behaviors and the six dimensions of job satisfaction as measured by the Job Descriptive Index. One hundred fifty four community health workers working in Texas, New Mexico, and California participated in the study. Findings from this research indicate a similar pattern to existing research; transformational leadership behaviors had significant positive relationships with perceived managers' effectiveness, satisfaction with manager, and followers' extra effort. As it related to managers' effectiveness, transactional leadership and passive leadership mattered, but the relationship was not strong. Regarding the relationship between the full-range leadership behaviors and measures of job satisfaction, transformational leadership had a positive relationship with satisfaction with supervision and passive leadership had a negative relationship with satisfaction with supervision.
