Through the understanding of workplace variables such as organizational commitment (OC) and cultural identity valued in the workplace (CIVW), U.S. managers can gain a better understanding of Iranian professional immigrants, in particular, and other Iranian and Middle Eastern immigrants, in general, as they contribute to an organization’s performance.
The purpose of this research was to: (a) explore the trend of immigration from Iran to the United States, (b) observe the attitude of Iranians, (c) examine the attitudinal response of organizations toward Iranian employees, and (d) explore the relationship between Iranian immigrants’ perception of the extent that their cultural identity is valued in the workplace. In addition, this research explored Iranian immigrants’ attachment to their cultural values and organizational commitment. The results of this study will encourage managers to integrate not only Iranian immigrant employees, but also all immigrant employees in a more effective and efficient way by tapping their full potential in the workplace.
There are more than one million Iranians living in the United States today, with almost half a million of them living in Southern California. Data collected through a questionnaire distributed among Iranians living in Southern California provided information to evaluate the relationship between the commitment Iranians have towards their organization and the awareness of their culture being valued by the organization. The samples were taken from the Yellow Pages for the Iranian community in Southern California, and names were randomly chosen with an interval of five.
The results of the data showed that nearly 100% of the respondents were college graduates, 83% had income over $60,000, and about 95% are in management, technical, or professional jobs. The other demographic information indicated that 82% are U.S. Citizens, 56% have five or more family members in the U.S., and 79% of the respondents were living in the United States 16 years or more. Also, reliability analysis of OC instrument was conducted by calculating the alpha coefficient for OC scale items of the total data set. A coefficient alpha of 0.7356 was achieved. This result exceeded the minimum acceptable level of 0.70, and indicated a good reliability. The coefficient alphas for OC’s subsidiary components were achieved as well: Affective Commitment (AC) 0.707, Continuous Commitment (CC) 0.729, and Normative Commitment (NC) 0.768.
