The heterogeneous oxidation of thin hydrocarbon films

Abstract:

This thesis describes the instrumental apparatus and experimental techniques used to create clean molecular beams of hydroxyl radicals and the heterogeneous chemistry that ensues when these beams are reactively scattered off thin organic films. The first part of the thesis describes in detail the process of generating OH radical beams and the techniques used to quantify and identify the molecular species present in the beams. In addition, reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) of surface-bound species is discussed. The second part of the thesis describes the heterogeneous OH radical reactions of two different thin film surfaces: alkane and alkene-terminated films. The resultant oxidation chemistry is monitored with RAIRS. Finally, the reactions of surface-bound alkenes with ozone is studied and contrasted to the analogous homogenous chemistry.
