Teacher unionism: Past, present, and future. A study to determine the future of union involvement in school reform
by Yusim, Samuel E., Ed.D., NATIONAL-LOUIS UNIVERSITY, 2008, 212 pages; 3335144

Abstract:

This qualitative study examines the history of teacher unionism including historic milestones for the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), a history of collective bargaining, a discussion of professional unionism, the generations' theory of unionism, and notable accomplishments of the Teacher's Union Reform Network (TURN). Interviews of seven union and administrative practitioners, and a focus group of union reformers were analyzed to determine common themes around the role of unions in school reform. Four themes emerged: (1) Professionalism is the binding force; (2) Collectivity results in shared power; (3) Envisioning change together; and (4) Leadership is essential for success. Recommendations for action are made for school boards, administrators, and teachers' unions. Teacher peer review is discussed as a promising practice for the future of union involvement in school reform.
