Teacher career stages and staff development utilizing a mixed methodology approach to research

Abstract:

The author of this study carries forward the link between teacher career stages and staff development. The subjects were 67 teachers made up of 12 non-tenured, 28 middle stage, and 27 veteran teachers. All participants completed an initial quantitative survey and 12 participants offered to partake in the qualitative interview portion of the mixed methodology study. Participants from one U.S. school district responded to statements and questions regarding the staff development needs of teachers in relation to the three identified career stages, whether staff development opportunities are appropriate to meet teacher needs in regard to the three identified career stages, and what teachers from each of the identified career stages believe is the most beneficial staff development opportunity. Teachers expressed a need in both the quantitative and qualitative studies to improve aspects of staff development in the district. Although there was an overall sense of concern about staff development, the data collected also suggested that there were differing staff development needs at each career stage, and that differentiating staff development to meet these varying needs may be appropriate.
