E-mentoring program for the women of Iraq and Afghanistan: An exploratory study

Abstract:

This study explored the potential benefit of establishing an e-mentoring program for the women of Iraq and Afghanistan. The women of Iraq and Afghanistan now face new or different challenges as their countries go through political, economic, and social change (Salbi, Z. 2005). The program would allow the women of Iraq and Afghanistan to be more informed, share ideas, help their nation and grow personally and professionally by establishing a relationship with an e-mentor living in the United States. This study explored the possibility of e-mentoring the women to determine if they believed, wanted, or thought e-mentoring would help them through this difficult time, their desire to learn and to advance women’s place in Iraq or Afghanistan. The study would determine if e-mentoring would benefit the respondents as well as determine if they desire the help.

A mixed methodology was used in the study to survey the women in both countries in order to determine computer and Internet access. The survey polled the respondents, women in Iraq and Afghanistan, who were interested in having a mentor, specifically an e-mentor, and if they desired to learn and communicate with women from the United States. E-mentors from the United States were chosen because they have risen from a societal oppression, achieved the right to vote and then the right to be educated (Tilly, 2004).

With the war on terror, the research should determine if those surveyed would be able to develop a relationship with a woman from the United States.
