Teachers' perspectives of Latino students: Meaning, influence and practice
by Montgomery, Andrea, Ph.D., UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT CHICAGO, 2008, 138 pages; 3327427

Abstract:

The Latino population has increased in the suburbs across the United States. In one Midwestern suburb there has been a growth from 651,000 to 862,000. This population increase has had an effect on the school system. There is a demand for bilingual and ESL teachers and support staff. This qualitative study explores the meaning of four White teachers and how they are experiencing this demographic change in their student population. The study used Connelly and Clandinin's (2000) three-space narrative inquiry framework. The theoretical orientation drew critical race theory, with some admixture of postmodernism.
