by Niles, Duane R., Jr., D.A., UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN COLORADO, 2008, 221 pages; 3318411

Abstract:

The music of John Cacavas includes many genres. This study explores his original concert band music and gives insight into the career of this prolific composer and arranger. Cacavas has written 124 original concert band compositions along with 220 band arrangements. In addition, he has written music for marching band, stage band, orchestra, vocal music, solos and ensembles, and scores for television movies and series and major motion pictures. Fifteen compositions were selected for further study. The selections were based on a variety of styles considered a top representative of that style. When Cacavas writes music, he takes into account the inherent difficulties of each instrument. He writes music that will help each ensemble be as successful as possible. His compositions are an important addition to the repertoire of bands in our educational music system.
