Factors affecting nonpublic school choices as identified by parents in Arkansas

Abstract:

The intent of this study was to determine the reasons parents give for choosing accredited nonpublic schools in Arkansas and whether the reasons for choice differ based on the type of school chosen, whether Catholic or other nonpublic. The research design was quantitative, accomplished through surveys administered to nonpublic school parents in Arkansas. Survey data was analyzed using SPSS software. Findings revealed that academics, availability of religious training, personal attention, discipline, and safety were major criteria for parents choosing nonpublic schools. While significant differences were revealed regarding reasons for nonpublic school choice by parents of Catholic schools and other nonpublic schools in Arkansas, the main conclusion is that parents choose nonpublic schools not for only one reason, but for a package of factors they deem important.
