The initiation and implementation of professional learning communities in a Georgia's Needs Improvement school: A case study

Abstract:

This study examined the initiation and implementation of professional learning communities as a school improvement initiative in a Georgia Needs Improvement elementary school. With the primary focus to be removed from the list, and the overall goal to continue improvements so that the school will not only remain in good standing academically but also provide students with high quality education. Professional learning communities (PLCs) began with the acquisition of the Reading First Grant and the Math and Science Partnership. Administrators saw the benefits of being a member of a PLC, and adopted this as a schoolwide initiative to raise student achievement and enhance the instruction provided to students. The perceived effectiveness was determined by analyzing data collected from questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations.
