Predictors of employees' tolerance of aggressive behavior in the workplace

Abstract:

The current study examined predictors of tolerance of aggressive behavior in the workplace. It was hypothesized that perceptions of low levels of organizational justice, presence of trait anger, and previous exposure to workplace aggression would predict tolerance of workplace aggressive. One-hundred and eleven employees from a Veterans Affairs Medical Center completed an online questionnaire. The hypothesized model was not supported. Scores of tolerance of aggressive behavior in the workplace did not pass a test of normality, as participants overwhelmingly reported low levels of tolerance. The need for a better measure of tolerance of workplace aggression was discussed. Proper measurement of tolerance of aggressive behavior in the workplace will allow employers to assess the culture of the work environment with respect to aggressive behavior and design appropriate interventions.
