Abstract: This dissertation consists of three essays in the economics of occupation, marital status and fertility choices. The first essay documents and examines career and fertility behavior of women in a static framework to explore how occupational choice affects women's decision on fertility. The second essay develops and estimates a discrete time, discrete choice dynamic utility maximization model to investigate how relevant determinants influence women's decisions over their careers. The dynamics of life-cycle occupation, marriage and fertility choices are captured by various state and duration dependence. Uncertainty comes from the unexpected failure of birth control and from a choice-specific random shock to utility each period. The third essay focuses on the economic determinants of marital dissolution and analyzes the effects of expected and unexpected changes in earnings on marital dissolution.
