The confident online teacher: Understanding and encouraging virtual high school teacher efficacy

Abstract:

Online learning is experience rapid growth at all levels, with exponential grown in recent years at the K-12 level. While professional educational organizations have issued guides and standards for quality online courses and instruction (National Education Association, n.d.; Southern Regional Educational Board, 2006a), few observations or recommendations have been made regarding teacher induction and professional development for online K-12 teachers and its effect on teacher performance and efficacy in the online classroom. This quantitative survey study examined the perceived teacher efficacy of a population of online teachers at a state-sponsored virtual high school. This study evaluated the effect of various professional development activities on teachers' perceived efficacy in their online classrooms in an attempt to produce data that can inform the processes of hiring and training virtual teachers as well as for creation and support of continuing professional development program for online K-12 educators.
