External goods from Socrates to the Stoics
by Petruzella, Gerol Christopher, Ph.D., STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AT BUFFALO, 2007, 224 pages; 3291519

Abstract:

It is of central concern to ancient Greek ethics to account adequately for the intuitive, yet problematic, claim that our achievement of [varepsilon]?????o??? is subject to the influence of contingent circumstance and external goods. Although four major figures and schools of ancient Greek philosophy - Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and the Stoics - respond in substantially different ways to this issue, their shared eudaemonist assumptions nevertheless form a common basis for understanding them as representative of a coherent philosophical tradition.
