Fathers' resilience in the face of their child's leukemia: A qualitative study
by Chamberlain, Heather, PsyD, ALLIANT INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY, SAN DIEGO, 2007, 0 pages; 3280888

Abstract: This qualitative dissertation retrospectively examined fathers' challenges, coping abilities, and resilience in reaction to their child's leukemia. Eight participants were interviewed and completed the COPE Inventory, a self-report inventory that measures the frequency of coping behaviors and strategies. Each participant's child was currently in remission and out of treatment for less than 5 years at the time of the interview. The study design and analyses included tenets from grounded theory and constant comparative methods. Major and minor themes related to challenges and to resilience and coping were found. The themes of feeling included in treatment, the diagnostic process, lack of knowledge about the disease, negative aspects of work, and negative thoughts about doctors were new themes revealed in a study. Clinical implications and future research directions are presented.
