Teachers' and parents' perceptions toward four-year-old kindergarten programs and their influence on academic and social growth of students

Abstract:

This study explored the significance of a voluntary Four-Year-Old Kindergarten Program and the extent to which it has an effect on student readiness for school. Feeling pressure to leave no child behind and to ensure all students achieve at their potential, school districts are offering four-year-old kindergarten programs to enhance social and academic readiness skills. This qualitative study surveyed and interviewed four-year-old kindergarten teachers, kindergarten teachers and parents to gather perceptions regarding the influence of four-year-old kindergarten on academic and social growth of students. Descriptive statistics in table and narrative formats are organized according to 3 research questions. Findings may assist other districts in planning, implementation, and evaluation of their four-year-old kindergarten programs.
