Teachers' SST tales: A study of teachers' perceptions and knowledge of Georgia Student Support Team

Abstract:

The purpose of Student Support Team (SST) is to address learning and/or behavior problems of students using a systematic process that enables teachers' tools to create individual strategies and modifications to be used for increased success. Georgia mandates that all public schools implement and utilize an SST. Although all Georgia elementary schools implement a mandated SST, it is not known how regular education teachers perceive the SST process and implement learning strategies used in the individual student learning plan. The purpose of this study was descriptive in nature with the outcome of describing the regular elementary education teacher's perception of the SST process and the learning strategies used in the individual student learning plan. Results from the study were used to address research questions on the following topics: (a) reasons students are referred to SST, (b) training provided to those involved in SST, (c) development of learning strategies, (d) implementation of learning strategies, (e) evaluation of learning strategies, (f) student outcomes as SST result, and (g) teachers' perceptions of SST. The goal of this study was to present precise and accurate descriptive findings so that others may use its findings and benefit from it. Shared teacher experiences with detailed learning strategies will provide the information and support needed to make well informed decisions. Important knowledge compiled and presented to educators interested in the SST process may provide the basis for many other studies to improve existing policies and procedures.
