Keeping the brothers focused: A study of the impact of male mentoring on the community college level

Abstract:

This mixed-method case study examined to what extent mentoring is effective in increasing retention of African American male students at a community college. The data was collected in two phases. The first phase of the study involved the quantitative component, which entailed collecting data from (a) records at the sample community college site and (b) survey responses from the mentees in the mentoring program at the said institution. The second phase of the study included semi-structured interviews with various stakeholders in the mentoring program. The themes that emerged from the quantitative and qualitative data collection demonstrated a positive correlation between mentoring and the retention of the students in the study.
