An adolescent trauma and spirituality group intervention
by Snetter, Miatta Raschel, Psy.D., PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY, 2007, 101 pages; 3271293

Abstract:

Researchers have identified a direct relationship between spirituality and psychological functioning. This relationship has been observed in both adolescent and adult populations, although to a lesser extent with adolescents. In adolescent studies, current evidence reveals that the presence of an intrinsic and active spiritual belief system may act as a protective factor against, as well as an aid in the recovery process from psychological and psychosocial dysfunction. The treatment of depression, conduct and delinquency problems, self-injurious behaviors, posttraumatic stress reactions, and other often-observed ramifications of adolescent trauma may be enhanced using a spiritual trauma group, specific to the needs of this population. The author of the present study provides a facilitator's manual for group treatment of adolescents with a history of trauma, particularly those who have been victims of neglect and of physical and emotional abuse.
