Canadian women composers: An annotated bibliography of solo and chamber music for clarinet
by Henderson, Heather, D.M.A., ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY, 2007, 133 pages; 3270584

Abstract:

Recital repertoire for clarinet by Canadian women composers is largely unknown to the clarinet world. This makes their body of work a viable and largely untapped resource.

The purpose of this annotated bibliography is to present clarinet repertoire by Canadian women composers in an accessible and comprehendible format to students, teachers and performers. The research has been limited to repertoire with the following instrumentation: solo clarinet, clarinet and piano, clarinet and electronics, and chamber music up to five instruments. The annotations include information on instrumentation, date of the composition, duration, difficulty level, recordings, commissions, premieres, comments about the musical content and program notes. The comments section can include program notes provided by the composer, description of the musical content, a summary of any extended techniques required, and other notes of interest about a given piece. The majority of the pieces covered in this project are available through the Canadian Music Centre. For ease of locating these pieces the Canadian Music Centre call numbers have been provided. Pieces that do not include call numbers are available directly from the composer.

Since the goal of this project is to increase the visibility of music composed by Canadian women in a truly global sense, the written dissertation is augmented by a website where interested parties can search for repertoire by composer, title, ensemble and level of difficulty.
