From sojourners to global educators: Teachers and the international immersion experience

Abstract:

The need for U.S. teachers to better understand and disseminate information about world affairs and world cultures is growing. However, evidence points to a state of unpreparedness among American educators to present international and global issues and cultural sensitivities to students. Much research has indicated the potential for international travel and study experiences to expand international understanding and cultural awareness for the sojourner. Through a qualitative case study, this research sought to discover how cultural and global understanding was transferred to educational practices within American classrooms when teachers experienced international immersion. A questionnaire, individual interviews, and document examination facilitated data collection from teachers at a cluster of schools within an Atlanta public school system.
