Lake Methodism
by Cragwall, Jasper Albert, Ph.D., PRINCETON UNIVERSITY, 2007, 195 pages; 3260748

Abstract:

Lake Methodism measures the fearful symmetry between the most famous expressions of British Romanticism, and the most infamous pieties of late eighteenth-century religious enthusiasm. Cultural panics over class contaminations and sexual irregularities haunt "high romantic argument," which Lake Methodism explores in the self-consciously polite poetry and prose of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Southey, the Shelleys, Hazlitt, and Hunt---as well as the spectacularly popular, and irremediably "vulgar" evangelical autobiographies, sermons, hymns, and periodicals that towered over the era.
