Changing a high school mascot
by Tourdot, William J., Ed.D., EDGEWOOD COLLEGE, 2007, 90 pages; 3260031

Abstract:

This case study examined aspects of changing a high school mascot. Although a team mascot may have been insignificant to the purpose of a district, changing a mascot could be time consuming and troublesome. For schools that needed to change because their mascot was race based or other societal pressures, it was helpful to follow a prescribed process. This study examined a Wisconsin school district and their process of successfully changing a Native American mascot. The study showed that their success followed a process suggested by others that have investigated this type of change. Each district is unique, but by following the example of this study, suggests the process of changing a mascot could be made much easier.
