The role of adipose tissue-derived cells in salvaging cardiac function following an acute myocardial infarction

Abstract: While major advances have been made in the treatment of cardiovascular disease over the past 40 years, it remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in industrialized nations. Stem cell therapy has the potential to advance the standard of care to improve cardiac function following an ischemic insult. While adult stem cells from numerous tissues have been identified, this dissertation shows that a stem cell population isolated from subcutaneous adipose tissue improves cardiac function following an acute myocardial infarction and further identifies mechanisms by which this functional enhancement is achieved.
