Low dimensional condensed matter systems and the renormalization group

Abstract: The renormalization group is one of the most important concepts to be introduced to physics in the last half-century. It has allowed us to begin to understand how matter can take so many different forms and phases with such widely different properties. In many cases it also provides a calculational method by which one can understand the phase structure and behavior of theoretical model systems. In this thesis, the renormalization group is used to understand a number of one- and two-dimensional condensed matter model systems. These systems are applicable for understanding features of the high-temperature superconducting Cuprate materials as well as quasi-one-dimensional wires.
