Voluntary network markets

Abstract: Voluntary network markets are those where firms are able to influence the extent of network effects associated with their product. This can be achieved through either technological means or the use of targeted pricing schemes. Regardless of the method used to create (or strengthen) network effects, the associated market will operate under different dynamics than were present prior to the voluntary network effects' introduction. Models of both categories are developed, and their implications for social welfare and public policy are discussed.
