Leadership style differences: Black and white female managers

Abstract: The problem. The purpose of this study was to determine if there were differences in the initiating structure and consideration styles of leadership between black and white female managers as measured by the Leadership Opinion Questionnaire. To accomplish this purpose, the following research questions were originated for investigation: (1) Are there differences between groups in initiating structure style of leadership? (2) Are there differences between groups in consideration styles of leadership? Method. A demographic questionnaire and a Leadership Opinion Questionnaire (LOQ) were distributed to 100 black and 100 white female managers employed in public and private organizations. A comparison of respondents' scores on the LOQ was conducted to determine if ethnicity has a statistically significant effect on the other initiating structure or consideration scores. Results. The research data from 104 female managers were assessed using the t-test, F-test, and chi-square. There were significant differences in the initiating structure and consideration scores of the respondents. White respondents' initiating structure and consideration scores were higher than their black counterparts: White respondents' initiating structure and consideration scores were 60.22 and 61.04, respectively. Black respondents' initiating structure and consideration scores were 58.62 and 56.56, respectively. Both groups scored above average on initiating structure and consideration style of leadership. The research did not show an age difference among the respondents but did show that black female managers had more education and work experience than their white counterparts.
