STACEE observations of Markarian 421 above 100 GeV and a new method for high-energy spectral analysis

Abstract: Markarian 421 is a nearby (z=0.03) blazar that is actively studied to constrain both physical blazar models and models of the extragalactic background light. The Solar Tower Atmospheric Cherenkov Effect Experiment (STACEE), a wavefront-sampling detector sensitive to ∼ 100 GeV gamma rays, detected Mkn 421 during a multiwavelength campaign in early 2004. This thesis covers the 2004 STACEE observations of Mkn 421 and their analysis. The goal of the project was to measure the gamma-ray spectrum of Mkn 421; such a spectral result would be STACEE's first and one of the first from any detector in STACEE's energy range. Achieving this goal required the development of a new method for reconstructing gamma-ray energies from the STACEE data. The reconstruction method is described in detail, and the resulting spectrum is presented. Finally, the implications of the results for understanding high-energy emission mechanisms in AGN are discussed.
