Electrochemical treatment of synthetic wastewater containing textile dyes

Abstract:

Textile industries use various kinds of chemicals including dyestuffs and pigments during dyeing and finishing processes. The effluent from these processes includes suspended particles, strong color, high pH and high chemical oxygen demand (COD) that are extremely toxic and make environmental hazard. In this study we present the applicability of electrocoagulation (EC) technique which is an efficient, simple, and cost-effective technology for removing dyes such as Direct Red 23, and mixture of Direct Red 23 and Orange II using iron electrodes, and also establish the optimized removal conditions by changing dye concentration, current density, electrolyte, residence time and pH. The maximum removal efficiency of Direct red 23 was recorded 99% and the experimental condition were 2A current, dye concentration 40ppm, residence time 11minutes, electrolyte 3g/l at pH 7. Mixed dye was removed at 97% while current density was 109 A/m2, dye concentration 10 ppm, residence time 11 minutes and electrolyte 4g/l at pH 7.The removal efficiency of dye was investigated using UV-visible spectroscopy. The EC-floc was also characterized using XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDS and HPLC. The results showed a presence of amorphous particles including an exclusive amount of magemite and gethite (iron oxides).
