Computational and Experimental Analysis of Composite Overwrap Repair of Butt-Joint PVC Pipes

Abstract:

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials are studied and used in the repair of pipeline systems. During the last few decades, researchers have mostly focused on the repair of rigid pipe rather than plastic pipe. An experimental and computational comparison study for several repair methods is conducted to determine the feasibility of E-glass/epoxy overwrap repairing butt joint pipes under pure bending. An undamaged pipe group and a coupler fitting repair group are also tested for comparison purposes. The test results indicate both coupler fitting and FRP composite overwrap repair can provide at least full moment capacity equivalent to undamaged pipes. However an FRP composite overwrap may alter the load carrying mechanism of the flexible system and result in brittle failure rather than the original ductile failure mode.
