The influence of personality and internalization of media ideals on Facebook image selection

Abstract:

A survey was conducted with over 250 undergraduate students, and their profile images were analyzed to explore whether personality traits such as narcissism and self-esteem, and the internalization of ideals portrayed in the media were correlated to the images individuals chose as profile pictures on the social network site Facebook. Profile pictures were analyzed according to three variables of traditional content analysis, and the study found a significant correlation only for the internalization of media ideals. Narcissism and self-esteem were not correlated to the social distance, amount of dress, or behavior individuals displayed in their profile pictures. The findings are discussed in terms of Goffman's work on self-presentation.
