Effective Psychoeducational Interventions For Young Individuals with Diabetes: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract:

A systematic literature review was conducted to investigate how occupational therapy practitioners can design and implement psychoeducational interventions with children and adolescents diagnosed with diabetes and to determine the effect of the interventions on their quality of life and depressive symptoms. Eight articles were analyzed to assess the impact of psychoeducational interventions on quality of life and depression. These interventions included coping skills training, motivational interviewing, and health-related quality of life interventions. With the limited amount of research, we cannot conclude which psychoeducational intervention is most effective for occupational therapy practitioners to use with young individuals with diabetes. However, we did determine that adolescents aged 12-20 would experience significantly better outcomes that positively affect their engagement in occupations after receiving psychoeducational interventions. Primary research by occupational therapy practitioners using psychoeducational interventions with young individuals with diabetes is warranted.
