How Can Contexts Benefit Children with ASD in Leisure Activities: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract:

Leisure activities have the ability to facilitate performance skills and social behaviors allowing enhancement of self-efficacy and autonomy particularly in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD; Vroman, 2010). Contexts and environments (cultural, personal, temporal, virtual, physical, and social) are important components of leisure that are essential to consider in occupational therapy interventions yet leisure intervention recommendations have not focused on contexts and environments in children diagnosed with ASD. This systematic literature review concluded the most beneficial methods to address the contexts and environments with leisure activities, for children with ASD these included: social interaction supports, technology application, strengths-based incorporation, and activity structure.
