Implementing positive behavior support in preschool classrooms of typically developing students

Abstract:

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is an evidence-based framework to guide decision making for students in need of behavior interventions at the universal, secondary, and tertiary levels. This study implemented PBS into two preschool classrooms in a community-based setting to examine the effects of PBS at the universal level. In this multiple-baseline study, the problem behaviors of students were measured through direct observations before and during PBS implementation. In addition, the integrity of PBS implementation was measured with a fidelity checklist and the Preschool School Wide-Evaluation Tool (Pre-SET).In both classrooms, problem behaviors of students decreased when PBS was implemented with greater integrity. This study found that it is feasible to implement PBS in a preschool and that PBS may be an effective way to manage problem behaviors in early childhood.
