Abstract:

In this dissertation first of all I emphasize understanding the ecumenical position of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. Then I think about its relevance for Baptists in a Ukrainian context. In relation to my first purpose concerning the Greek-Catholic Church the fact is that the Greek-Catholic Church is part of the whole Catholic Church. Therefore I start as a background first from the observation of the position which the Catholic Church holds in the area of ecumenism. Then moving to the Greek-Catholic Church I look at its ecumenical views. In relation to methodology I analyze different documents which relate to the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. Through these documents looking at ideas there and interpreting them, I reach an understanding of the ecumenical position of the Greek-Catholic Church moving then to thoughts about its relevance for Baptists. As a result of work in the area of understanding the ecumenical position of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church I see that the Church is open for ecumenical relationships with Baptists. They are seen as brethren for Greek-Catholics with whom they can make projects, for example, in the area of social work. Now concerning the relevance of their position for Baptists, I find it is possible to speak about the positive role of the Greek-Catholic position in changing old views in Ukrainian society which held that Baptists are sectarians. Then as the Church, according to its ecumenical position, is open to Baptist churches it is possible for Baptists to have support from Greek-Catholics in relationships with the state in making an emphasis on religious freedom or equality of all religions. Also when I think about relevance I note difficulties which Baptists can find in the ecumenical position of the Greek-Catholic Church with its emphasis on visible unity in one Church. This Church in the wider context will be the Catholic Church. Baptists can see the emphasis on visible unity in one Church as an attempt to set control over others.
