A hierarchical architecture for a scalable digital array radar

Abstract:

Phased-array radar systems use multiple antenna elements to transmit and receive signals in a directional manner. The electronic steering offered by such systems allows for rapid traversal of the beam. However, the complexity of such systems make them comparatively expensive. The steady increase in processing power available with digital electronics has made it possible recently to contemplate alternatives to the traditional analog beamforming networks employed by such systems. This thesis presents a hierarchical architecture for a digital array radar system, employing a fully-digital beamformer with an individual transceiver at every element. The elimination of the analog beamformer provides the system with much greater flexibility than that of traditional phased array radars, with a concurrent reduction in expense. The feasibility of this architecture is demonstrated by the results of an indoor target-tracking test, with the system able to track the location of a target in the presence of a cluttered environment.
