Correlation of the Hang Clean and Back Squat on Vertical Jump and Lower Body Explosive Strength

Abstract:

As strength and conditioning professionals, it is important to understand the importance of hang clean and back squat on vertical jump height and lower body explosive strength in athletes. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation of hang cleans and back squats on vertical jump height and lower body explosive strength in Division II male football players. The study consisted of 20 male student-athletes over an 11-week in-season strength training program. The results suggested that there was a significant change in vertical jump height from pre test to post test. However, there was no correlation between vertical jump height and increase in hang clean and back squat 1RM's. Thus, strength and conditioning professionals should understand the importance of a well-rounded and structured training program.
