The emotional wellbeing of Latina adolescents: A qualitative study
by Ohlhaver, Melissa L., M.S.W., CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, LONG BEACH, 2011, 143 pages; 1499190

Abstract:

The current study is a qualitative exploration of the emotional wellbeing of Latina adolescents. Life experiences, stressors, and coping skills are examined within the context of multiple domains. Attitudes towards mental health services were also explored. Fifteen individuals were recruited from a youth center in Orange County, California to participate in structured one-on-one interviews.

Findings indicated that all participants experienced discrimination primarily within the academic environment. Although participants reported on predominate emotions associated with happiness, the majority reported emotional experiences referred to as negative states. Participants reported on challenges faced within their communities, schools, families, and peer relationships which influenced their emotional wellbeing. Expressed strengths among many participants included high academic motivation and adaptive coping skills. Recommendations are discussed.
