Color's role in wayfinding: The effectiveness of color to aid in wayfinding at a pediatric clinic

Abstract:

This study examined patients' responses to the effective use of color for wayfinding purposes in a pediatric clinic in Little Rock, Arkansas. The researcher utilized a survey instrument for 302 parents of children at a 15,000 square foot pediatric clinic that incorporated color-coded corridors as part of the wayfinding design package. The sample respondents ranged from 18–55 years of age, including both male and female subjects. Measures were taken for color awareness, stress level, familiarity with the clinic through previous visit history, and opinion of the family's experience at the clinic. Specific questions recorded ease or difficulty of wayfinding to specific locations and the respondent's opinions about wayfinding cues, such as the color-coded corridors, signage and verbal directions. The study included two phases: in the second phase, the patients were divided into two groups, those that received color within verbal directions and those that did not. Accuracy of color recall was also measured.

Results indicated over 72% of the participants noted that color cues helped them find their way in the clinic. Gender was not a factor in color awareness or opinion of color as an effective wayfinding cue. Sixty-five percent of the respondents stated that color-coded flooring helped them find their way and similarly, 58% correctly identified the color of the corridor used. Findings indicated that color-coded flooring was slightly more effective than signage. A 10% increase in color recall was recorded when color was used within verbal directions to a destination. The study showed that color served as an effective cue that enhanced wayfinding in the studied clinic.
