Listening to her story: Life, love and liberation in Ama Ata Aidoo's "Changes: A Love Story"
by Lang, Charmaine Renee Yaa, M.A., CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, DOMINGUEZ HILLS, 2011, 60 pages; 1498926

Abstract:

This research analyzes Ama Ma Aidoo's Changes: A Love Story. The research focuses on how the novel addresses the intersection of gender, class and nation in relation to the empowerment of African women as they face the oppression and exploitation of existing in a white and androcentric world. Aidoo works to dismantle systems of oppression and discrimination by writing about the complexities of Ghanaian women.

Aidoo has strong women characters who serve as catalyst for change in their societies. What is clear from this study is that Aidoo's main concern is the empowerment of African women. This is represented in her writing style, which is a stream of consciousness presented by possibilities set before women as they begin to take charge of their lives.
