Modification of the Stoner-Wohlfarth astroid by a spin-polarized current

Abstract:

Spintronics, or Spin Electronics, is an emerging and promising technology that exploits the intrinsic spin of the electrons to make next-generation nano-scale solid-state devices. The Stoner-Wohlfarth Astroid is a fundamental concept in ferromagnetism that gives important information about the magnetization equilibiria and characterizes the magnetization reversal of nanomagnets in applied magnetic fields. In this article, by using new theoretical models and computational simulations, we study the distortion of Stoner-Wohlfarth Astroid under the combined influence of applied fields and spin-polarized currents. We find that spin transfer from the currents significantly changes the shape of the astroid and produces a special region with altered stabilities of the equilibria. An extension of the Stone-Wohlfarth Astroid model, as well as new criteria for the stability considerations, is presented here to account for the new phenomenon.
