Species Concepts and Studies in Sanchezia (Acanthaceae)
by Koenemann, Daniel Mark, M.S., THE CLAREMONT GRADUATE UNIVERSITY, 2011, 106 pages; 1497431

Abstract:

What is a species? And how does this influence our approach to systematics? These questions have been asked for centuries and there is no evidence that there will be any less interest in them in the coming years. By bringing a historical perspective to the species question I hope to shed light on current taxonomic practice. Specifically, I suggest we abandon the search for a universal species concept. The discussion of species concepts is followed by a brief nomenclatural review of Sanchezia (Acanthaceae) and a small morphometric study in the genus. The findings are consistent with a history of taxonomic splitting in the genus.
