Abstract:

This thesis is aimed at shedding new light on one of the most fundamental issues in multi-threaded programming—locality. Pedigree-based Locality Extent Analysis (PLEA), is a novel static analysis for Java that unifies the reasoning of thread locality, aggregate locality, and thread group locality. In addition to precisely identifying thread-local objects, PLEA is able to maximally place shared objects into aggregates—a cluster of objects with a unique entry for multi-threaded access—and determine what groups of threads access shared data. The locality information recovered by PLEA plays an essential role in understanding and optimizing multi-threaded programs.

One main technical innovation of PLEA is it uniformly reduces all three forms of locality analysis into a problem of solving linear constraints. A prototype of PLEA has been implemented as a Java tool, and its usefulness is validated by analyzing a number of real-world Java programs.
