Creating a class and its culture: Self-made women, architecture, and the development of elite suburbs and institutions in Los Angeles: 1889--1930
by Lain, Katherine, M.A., CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, NORTHRIDGE, 2010, 65 pages; 1496257

Abstract:

From 1889–1930, self-made women owned property and constructed buildings in the new elite suburbs of Los Angeles. As a result, they contributed to the shape and growth of the city. Two test cases, Mary S. Caswell and Lillian Burkhart Goldsmith, exerted social power and cultural influence through the purchase of real property, the construction of buildings, the choice of architectural styles and architects, the selection of residential neighborhoods, and the promotion of culture through literature and art history. By the end of the 1920s, their institutions had become cornerstones of the Protestant and Jewish social establishment in Los Angeles.
