Comparing levels of gambling education for student-athletes in NCAA Divison I and III institutions

Abstract:

In this study, a systematic random sample of 100 athletic directors at Division III schools and 100 compliance directors at Division I schools were surveyed to determine their perceptions on gambling education for student-athletes at their university to follow-up on previous research by the NCAA (2004, 2008). There was a significant difference between Division I and Division III institutions in response to the statement “it is important that student-athletes on my campus receive gambling education”; there were also differences found between schools in different Division I categories (FBS, FCS, and non-football schools), specifically in the response to the statement “gambling among our student-athletes on campus is a problem.” The findings explain some of what the NCAA surveys found. The findings are further discussed and future research recommendations are presented.
