Teacher Perception of Student Motivation in an Elementary Gifted and Talented Push in Instructional Program

Abstract:

The State mandated Gifted and Talented program in New Jersey is required by law. However, recent budget cuts in the state forced many school districts to lay off Gifted and Talented teachers. Therefore, a push in model was implemented in this district. Rather than Gifted and Talented students leaving to go to a separate program, the general education teacher was required to infuse this into the classroom for designated students using "packets" made especially for these qualified students. This Action Research Study examined teacher perceptions of student motivation in the push-in model of the Gifted and Talented program at the school studied. A number of methodologies were used to triangulate the data such as a Likert scale survey, an open- ended questionnaire, and an interview. Although there were some concerns regarding the administering of the packets, data suggests these separate activities were not distracting to other students in the classroom, and the identified students were actively engaged. However, the study also revealed that formal training would be necessary to help facilitate the packets and the packets should be closely aligned with the school curriculum.
